KIA TOA SENIOR A – 17 MAY 2014 MATCH REPORT ROUND 10 AGAINST TE KAWAU Toyota Grass Roots Rugby chose to film this first match of the second round, at Bill Brown Park. After all the rain over the last few weeks we enjoyed a fine mild winter’s day for our country cousins, the Te Kawau “Real Blokes”. Although some players found the surface a little slippery when changing direction and this proved costly on occasions allowing Te Kawau to score. Timely that everyone looks at the length of their studs for the rest of the season. Four well constructed tries were scored by half time to secure the bonus point. Three to the outside backs and one to captain - hooker Bryn Templeman, finishing off a solid forward drive in the corner. Te Kawau’s two first half tries essentially came from Kia mistakes, when our attack saw turn over ball without sufficient defensive cover. The teams started the second half with Kia Toa ahead 24 : 10. Te Kawau was more dominant in the second half, having long periods with the ball well with Kia Toa territory and scoring two further tries. And while we only scored only one more try, to our credit we showed a strong defensive line holding out the opposition for most of their time when pressing our line. Contesting possession at the break down remains a problem area and one where the penalty count is too high. The Referee lost patience with this facet of play and poor Kenny Wihongi was the final “fall guy” to gain a yellow card towards the end of the game. Final score was 34 : 20 to Kias. Three - Two – Ones were awarded to Maleli Sua (Three) for his two tries on the left wing. Lock Fraser Stone (Two) for dominating the line outs and his robust tight forward play. Nathan Tudreu (One) at centre for his try and strong fend off running. Other point scorers were a try to right winger Newton Tudreu and three conversions & a penalty goal to 1st five Jade Te Rure. The team now looks forward to meeting COB next week and put right the disappointing first round result. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Maleli Sua, 2–Fraser Stone, 1–Nathan Tudreu Kia Toa Senior 2nds vs Feilding Old Boys Oroua - Kimbolton 1p.m. Win to Kia Toa 38 v 17 Another slow start by the boys in implementing our game plan and getting some discipline and muscle into our game, both on attack and defence. Too much individual rather than team effort at the start and it took until the 2nd half for a bit more aggression at rugs and break downs to come through when we started to get some more go forward ball. Half time we were down 10 v 12 but in the second half we scored 28 points to 5 running out to a convincing win 38 v 17. Vaha and Joshua both had good strong performances in the forwards albeit that both were sin binned for over aggressive play meaning were down to 14 players for 20 minutes of the game. Once we settled down we started to get some good front foot ball as the forwards began playing as a pack and showed a little more patience in the 2nd half. This set the platform for the backs who all performed well and were able to penetrate more often. They also defended well with good solid defensive lines. The backs were ably directed by Kyle Williams at 1st 5/8 and in particular Ah Daung Malu with 3 tries and Steven George kicked well along with a try. We now need to focus on putting it on the field for a full 80 minutes and from the kick-off. Looking good for the top 6 play-offs and although we have had 3 losses we are building and with the players we have we plan to be a finalist this year. HT 10 v 12, FT 39 v 17 Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Ah Daung Malu, 2–Vaha Kilimasi, 1–Steven George Presidents vs Freyberg at Colquhoun park. Freyberg had not entered a Pressies team for a couple of years and were an unknown force. They stumped up 11 reserves, some B’s players due to Freyberg B’s withdrawing from their competition during the week. They had a couple big boys who were very difficult to bring down with the ball in hand and a steam up, more than one of our players got bounced off them. Except for Marley, who decided the best way to stop these boy was to plaster your body around them and hope they fall over carrying the extra weight. The first half was a tough battle, we scored two tries and converted one and led 12 to 7 at halftime. The second half had Frey’s scoring a try within minutes of the start, a few minutes later one of the Freys players is down with an injury. The score was 12 all. The injury was serious, the ambulance was called. We went to change fields only to find that the second field only had one set of goal posts and it appeared the field was unmarked. We did consider playing without conversions. As a stretcher was not available, the ref gave us two options. 1) Call the game and take the current score as the final score. 2) Carry on with the game but section off the field and not play anywhere near the injured player. Yes, you guessed it, we took option 2. (Never had that one offered before) Almost immediately we made ground down the side line and Stu scores in the corner where we weren’t supposed to be playing. Craig goes to take the kick and the Frey’s coach objects as the kick has to go over the injured player and he might get hit. Craig is quite a good kicker so we had faith that the injured player wouldn’t hit but you never know. The ref called the game with the score 17 to 12 to us. Bull might need to review his strategy of only playing the second half as he only got 8 minutes of play time on Saturday. The poor Freys player fractured his fibula. Five from five, runs off the tongue very easily, there is a good buzz developing with in the team. Te Kawau at Bill Brown this week. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Marley, 2–Paul Walton, 1–Paora Women vs FOBO at Kimbolton. The winner of the game would take Eketahuna Women’s Champions Cup home. In the first half, a FOBO player was injured and required medical attention. The game was moved to the top field and ended with a final score of 63 to 14 to Kias.
