KIDNAP SAGA: Civil Defence Corps Rescue Suspect from Lynch-Mob Killing in Abeokuta The incident occurred in Totoro area of the town, at about 2.55pm local time, when the woman was attacked by a mob following an alleged attempt to kidnap a child and was beaten blue and black before civil defence team arrived at the scene. Confirming the incident, Public Relations Officer of the corps, Kareem Olanrewaju said a taxi driver alerted civil defence men keeping vigil on critical infrastructures around Akin-Olugbade/Pepsi/Totoro areas that a woman had been attacked and was about to be killed. According to him, civil defence corps quickly raced to the scene to rescue the woman but all efforts and appeal to allow the suspected kidnapper face the consequence through the legal process proved abortive as the mob insisted on killing the woman. He added that following the rowdy situation, the civil defence officials called their office for reinforcement as a result of which armed men were deployed to the scene. Olanrewaju added that, despite the fact that civil defence men took possession of the suspect and made efforts to get a vehicle to convey her to a safe place, the aggrieved crowd still followed and were all along resisting that the woman should not be taken away. The situation according to him became more violent when the armed men of civil defence arrived, as the crowd started throwing available objects including bottles, planks, stones among others. He said the mob succeeded in breaking the windscreen of civil defence vehicle but the authorities were able to rescue the woman from being killed. He said the suspect became unconscious following the violent beating and had to be rushed to Federal Medical Centre where she is receiving treatment as at the time of this report. Meanwhile, the command appealed to members of the public to always ensure justice through legal means as jungle justice will make innocent people to suffer unnecessarily.
