KIDS AND CHORES Well, way back in the fifties, our stepmother - TopicsExpress

KIDS AND CHORES Well, way back in the fifties, our stepmother had us (all five kids) do certain things daily, weekly, and (shall we say) monthly. Daily, I made my bed, kept my room tidy, emptied the wastebaskets into an incinerator, desposed of the garage into a garbage can, and dried the dishes. Weekly, I changed my sheets, set out the trash, cut the grass, and watered the lawn. More sporadically, I pulled weeds in the garden, trimmed some of the bushes, and helped my father wash the cars. I got so burned-out that I basically do none of these today (kidding). As for our children, we mainly emphasized the bedroom stuff. With dishwashers and garbage disposals, some of the old-timey chores (even in suburbia) sort of fell by the wayside. (When the children were still quite little and shared a bedroom in the little apartment we had then, I devised a sure-fire game for having them pick up and put away their toys: I would go into their room and make a big pile of all their toys in the middle of the room; then I would put on a kitchen timer for ten or fifteen minutes and would make somewhat vague threats as to what would happen if the timer should ping before they were finished. The tic-tic sound of the timer would have them hopping around like little squirrels. It worked!)
