KIDS IN POVERTY Chicago. The report includes sobering statistics about the quality of life among children in Illinois. While infant mortality rates, child abuse cases and teen births have all declined in Stephenson County in recent years, the poverty rate among children in the county grew from 20.1 percent in 2006 to 24.4 percent in 2011, which are the latest figures available. Representatives from the Stephenson County Health Department Regional Office of Education No 8, Freeport Housing Authority and other agencies discuss the statistics and real-life examples of poverty from their own perspectives. Health Department Director Craig Beintema participants will reconvene Aug-8 to potential solutions to the regions poverty woes. Resources are very limited he said. Theyre not going to get better in the short run, so how do we partner together? Figuring that out is the Key. By Shannon Ireland--April 26,2014
