Alcala has encouraged overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Italy to invest part of their earnings on agriculture and fishery enterprises. He made the pitch during a series of agribusiness forum held in Rome, Milan and Turin, from June 16 to 23, 2013, where he and other DA officials discussed various agribusiness opportunities that include the production and processing of major crops, fruits, vegetables, livestock and poultry, and fishery products. The three-leg agribusiness forum, attended by about 700 Filipino OFWs, was jointly organized by the Department of Agriculture, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and the Philippine Embassy in Rome. It is part of a P2-billion OFW reintegration and agribusiness program launched in May 7, 2013 by the DA and DOLE. “We aim to empower OFWs and their families to venture in various agri-fishery projects, assist them in production, processing and marketing, and earn a sustainable income,” Secretary Alcala said before a crowd of about 350 OFWs in Rome, and Philippine embassy officials and staff led by Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. To date, there are about 170,000 OFWs in Italy, said Ambassador Reyes. Secretary Alcala said interested OFWs and their families may inquire at the DOLE’s National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO) or Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the DA’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Service (AMAS). Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said through the agribusiness forum OFWs could make wise investment decisions, even before they decide to come home for good. She joined Secretary Alcala at the Milan leg, on June 20, where about 200 OFWs attended. Another batch of 150 OFWs joined the agribusiness forum in Turin. During the forum at each site, the DA raffled off to lucky OFWs several head of goat and sheep, boat engines, bangus and tilapia fingerlings, and fruit tree seedlings that will be sent to their families in the Philippines. Many Filipinos who attended the agribusiness forum in Rome were overwhelmed by the program and posted their respective appreciation in social media networks. For instance, Noel Aragon Gofredo thanked the DA and DOLE for encouraging OFWs wanting to come back to the Philippines for good and help their family and relatives engage in viable agriculture and fishery enterprises in their respective hometowns. Another OFW, Lucille Corpuz Bolante said she is very happy that the government is now showing concern and looking after Filipinos abroad who have been working hard for their families for so many years. Secretary Alcala was in Rome to attend the biennial conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), on June 17, where he shared with FAO officials and fellow agriculture ministers all over the world the progress made by the Philippines in its campaign to eradicate hunger and poverty through the implementation of President Aquino’s Food Staple Sufficiency Program (FSSP). He also met with FAO director general Jose Graciano da Silva and led the inauguration of a newly-renovated Philippine conference room, aptly called ‘Sala Filipino,’ at the FAO headquarters. It features the colors and landscapes of the Philippines, the Banaue rice terraces, colorful sailboats, bamboo structures, and panoramic view of the countryside. head Creator~AQUA~ remate.ph/
