KILLING FIELDS – PHNOM PENH Killing fields is a spot located about 12 km outside Phnom Penh. Tourists are encouraged to visit this place. In fact, this is the only place at Phnom Penh. Rest are just markets like Russian Market or Central Market. Killing fields was the place where thousands of people were executed by Khmer Rouge government. People used to be brought to this place loaded in the trucks and shot dead. It is said that 1.3 million people were executed at sites like this and buried in mass graves. A visit to this place certains put one’s mood off. This is park like place with a few buildings. The main monument is a tower like building whiere hundreds of skulls of the victims are placed. The scene is horrifying. One has to pay a entry of a few dollars (Sorry, I have forgotten) to visit this place which is quite serene and very well managed. The visitors are given headphone audio sets which guide them. These audio sets are having commentary in several languages. Details and happening of all the spots are very nicely described in this commentary. There is also a small museum containing photographs of the genocide and atrocities. Killing Fields is a very different kind of monument. No temple, no art work, only skulls. Though the place turns you off, but still I shall remember my visit to this unique tourist place. I have also visited Hiroshima Peace Park where thousands of people were killed in one stroke, but Phnom Penh disturbed me more than the museum at Hiroshima Peace Park. More tomorrow
