KIM’S CONVENIENCE – Theatre Calgary Last night, I saw the premiere of Theatre Calgary’s “Kim’s Convenience”. Although Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, actor of the main character Appa, is a long-time resident of NW Calgary, the setting is Toronto’s Regent Park, where he runs his own convenience store. Appa faces the dilemmas of approaching retirement looking for a successor to run his establishment which he believes his local community cannot do without. His daughter Janet is still at home, but seems to be a reluctant heir apparent. Their prayers are answered as the play reaches its conclusion when guess who shows up! A happy end after all. I may have been watching in the Max Bell Theatre of the EPCOR Centre last night, but for the thick Korean accent, I could have been back in Asia where I lived in a large wintry Japanese city strategically located from Seoul just across the Sea of Japan. But don’t let Mr. Kim hear you mention that country. His memory is rather long for the inequities of history. theatrecalgary/plays/kims_convenience/more_info/
