KING CRIMSON @ THE ORPHEUM THEATRE, Sept. 30, 2014 By a generous last-minute invitation by our friend and a film director, RyuHei Kitamura (Godzilla Final Wars; Versus; Lupin III, etc), I got to see King Crimson last night at my favourite venue, The Orpheum Theatre in downtown L.A. There was no fancy stage set or lighting, no background projections, no MC, and the band was dressed more like 50s mafiosos than rock stars. They didnt need any of that. It was purely about music that makes one think about the true meaning of progressive in the obscure term Prog Rock. Rarely I encounter such high-level musicianship in a rock band. It was astounding. Now I do not know much about King Crimson, and it was the first show of the band for me, so I cannot compare to how they were back in 70s, 80s, etc, nor do I want to. But for me, it was a whole new unique experience - I never seen a concert like that. From the beginning to the end, I think I had my jaw dropped the whole time. I know that some fans felt three drums were too much and unnecessary....and I thought that too when I first saw three drumset in the front of the stage. But as soon as they started, I understood. Dont think of it as the double drums at most rock concerts. It works. Three drums were so well orchestrated and interesting enough on their own. It added the energy, power, incredible thickness, soul shaking vibrations, and almost tribal feel to the sound. Then on top of that, you have Tony Levin, Mel Collins (wow!), and of course, Robert Fripp....it was profound. When they did 21st Century Schizoid Man for encore, I said to myself, wait a minute, Im actually listening the real King Crimson playing this song that Ive only been listening on the radio.... ...surreal. Thank you Kitamura-san for giving me this amazing experience! Members on this tour: Robert Fripp - Gtr Mel Collins - Horns Tony Levin - Bass Jakko Jakszyk - Gtr/Vo.
