KINGDOM LIVING - Christmas 2014 1 Last week and this week we are pondering the reality of the Incarnation of Jesus and how all persons involved were effected. Meditating on the Christmas story is an invitation to also become more appreciative of Jesus sacrifice. Yes the ultimate sacrifice occurred on the cross but it began in the womb of Mary. First lets look at how Mary and Joseph were promised to each other. Since the time of Ezra, the law had been made that a man between the ages of 17-19 was required to have an espousal ceremony performed, requiring a time of preparation. If he was beyond the age of 19, it was not necessary. Joseph had to be then between the age of 17-19 years. Mary would have been eligible for a betrothal when she entered puberty around 12-13 years of age. Her closest male relative would then register Mary at the synagogue as eligible for marriage. A man seeking to be married would negotiate for her hand. If a man were over the age of 19, he would not have an espousal period and they could enter into marriage. We also can conclude that Mary was 13 or a bit older when she was espoused to Joseph. When we read how Mary and Joseph listened to the angelic visitations, we become aware of the divine preparation for the birth of Jesus. These two people were devout in their faith and knew the Word of God. As I look at my life I can see Gods hand too, how in spite of my failures, He has woven a hunger and thirst within to become part of this exciting story. I love to see manger scenes displayed; but the reality behind the beautiful figures is a reminder to go deeper into the call of God on my life. Gratitude and love demand this of me! The Angel Gabriel said to Mary, You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father, David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, His kingdom will never end. Luke 1:31-32
