KITCHENER STITCH INSTRUCTIONS November 15, 2013 I am taking this from my book: How-to Knitting for Beginners; Using the Continental Method. Kitchener stitch is used for connecting shoulder seams, armpit seams, and closing toes on socks. The stitches must be on two needles that you can hold together in one hand and the number of stitches on both needles must be the same. You will be creating knit stitches to join the two edges butted together invisibly. The yarn will pass through each stitch twice. To begin you will thread a tapestry needle with your garment yarn, then take the tapestry needle through the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl, and leave the stitch on the needle. Go to the back needle, go through the fist stitch with the tapestry needle as if to knit, pull the yarn through loosely and leave the stitch on the needle. *Come back to the front needle with the tapestry needle, go through the first stitch as if to knit, pull it off, purl the second stitch, and leave it there on the needle. Go to the back needle with the tapestry needle, go through the first stitch as if to purl, take the stitch off, go through the second stitch as if to knit, and leave it there on the needle*. Repeat loosely between the * until you have finished the last stitches. Gently pull the stitches to tighten them so that they match the tension of the rest of the knitting. Begin tightening where you began creating the grafted seam. It should blend right in. Please click on the link and have a look around. howto-knitting-for-beginners-with-lucy/
