KIWANIS NEWSLETTER December 8, 2014 Seasons Greetings! The Carrollton Key Club celebrated their 60th Anniversary with their sponsoring Kiwanis Club on Monday, December 8, 2014, in Eiserer Hall, at 6:30 p.m. Twenty-seven Kiwanians, twenty-two Key Club members, seven Kiwanians from Richmond, and Key Club Governor Emily Yates were in attendance. The evening began with Ron Schuler, Harry Barnett, and Brandon Shotten leading the group in song, pledge, and prayer, respectively. Earlene’s menu included chicken fettuccine Alfredo, seasoned green beans, garlic bread, tossed salad, and lemon cake with Cool Whip. President Norm Bliss gave a hearty welcome to everyone; he then asked members of the Richmond club and the Key Club to introduce themselves. One guest, Emily Yates, governor of Key Club in the Mo-Ark District, is from Independence. Norm continued with some club announcements: • Terrific Kids awards for this month will be at 8:10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 11, at Adams; and, at 8:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 12, at Carrollton Elementary School. • Ministerial Alliance asked for volunteers to help with the distribution of food from 9:00-11:00 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 18. Assembling the food packages will be held at the Assembly of God Church gymnasium. • No Kiwanis meetings on Dec. 22 or 29. Lt. Gov. Jim Gibson proceeded with the ceremony by reading an article written by the Carrollton Democrat about the formal charter night of the Key Club, April 15, 1955. Several current Kiwanis members that were in Key Club when they were in high school, David Martin, John Sweeney, Lynn Freeman, Katie Berrey, and Randall Barry, commented about their experience when they were in the club. Other members of our club, but not present, were Bob Mulch, Rebecca Mohn, and Jeff Tindle. Kiwanis member Arlene Heins, retired teacher and Key Club advisor for 20 years, spoke about how the first Key Club in California was started before Kiwanis International became its sponsor. She also talked about the many service projects they did when she was advisor, and thanked the current advisors, Alison Caselman and Todd Schachtsiek, for their excellent leadership of the club today. Jim Gibson introduced our guest, Emily Yates, Governor of Key Clubs in the Mo-Ark District for this year. Emily expressed her appreciation for the work the CHS Key Club does, encouraging them to do their best because they will have fond memories of their service to the community later on. She feels that service is a way of life, and by urging others to adopt this philosophy, the students and the community will be stronger. The final segment of the program was turned over to Brent Wilson, president of the Carrollton Key Club. By using a slide presentation, Brent talked about what his club has been doing for the Eliminate Project; what contributions the club has made with several Lt. Governors and one Governor – Andy Reimer-Fluhart; as well as other club projects including the UNICEF drive, concession stand, trash pick-up on Band Day, and the ice bucket challenge. Brent concluded by saying that the Carrollton High School Key Club helps build a better school and community. President Norm Bliss presented a Carrollton-made ceramic cup to Governor Emily Yates before adjourning the meeting. Next week, Kiwanis will meet at noon. Be safe and have a great week. Final Thought When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached: don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps. -- Confucius Ron Schuler, Secretary
