KIWANIS NEWSLETTER November 17, 2014 The Carrollton Kiwanis Club met Monday, November 17, 2014, with fifteen members, three guests, and two Key Clubbers. Robert Pavlu, John Sweeney, and Jim Gibson led the opening ritual of song, pledge, and prayer, respectively. Earlene Martin provided the lunch menu of a taco bar with all of the condiments, fruit salad, and lemon cake. The taco bar was well received on a cold winter day. President Norm Bliss welcomed the three guests, Andrew Warner, Lauren Barrett, and Anita Reid, as well as the two Key Clubbers, Mizuki Fukuda and Kara Berrey. Jay Wilson, Branch Manager of Bank 21, invited everyone to attend a “Business After Hours” on Thursday, November 20, between 4:00-6:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend, and refreshments will be served. The flag service on November 11, Veteran’s Day, was performed in the cold and wind. The community looked great, thanks to the following workers: Norm Bliss, Lynn Freeman, Ron Schuler, David and Earlene Martin, Fred and Mary Jane Phillips, Harry Barnett, Marty Rucker, and Jim Gibson. Loralee Sweeney stated that the Farm Bureau passenger float, used by our club to transport the Terrific Kids in the Chamber Lighted Christmas Parade, has been sold. At this time, we do not have a float for the parade. Two guest speakers shared the program for the evening. Mizuki Fukuda, a junior Foreign Exchange student at CHS, spoke to the club about her native country, Japan. Fred and Mary Jane Phillips are her host parents for the year, and Kara and Katie Berrey keep her company. Mizuki and Kara were dressed in Japanese apparel as Kara helped interpret during the presentation. Information about Japan, illustrated through the use of power-point, included their food, sports, style of clothes, language, currency and what her name means in Japanese. Mizuki has a good command of the English language for the little time she has spent here in the United States. The second speaker was Andrew Warner who attended Boy’s State last summer. He talked about his accomplishments, what a typical day was like, and his appreciation for the variety of guest speakers at the camp. Andrew made several new friends from throughout Missouri. He was grateful for this opportunity and thanked the club for sponsoring him. Jim Gibson and Lynn Freeman are diligently working on helping Higginsville start their own Kiwanis Club. A general meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 19, at 7:00 p.m., at the John Knox Village in Higginsville. John Sweeney sold the raffle tickets with Melvin Martin winning the loot. Our members graciously donate their winnings to the Kiwanis International “Eliminate Project.” Kiwanians, along with family and friends, are asked to start saving their magazines, that they no longer want, and donate them so that our club can ship these to the troops overseas. Jim Gibson is researching ways that these shipments could be sent at no cost to the club. Next week, Pam Stevens will present a program on the LaBella Hotel and Casa Event Center. Be safe and have a great week. Indiana Final Thought The secret of getting ahead is getting started. -- Mark Twain Ron Schuler, Secretary Recorded by Loralee Sweeney
