KNF NEWS RELEASE Man Fire Update (Up Wooley Creek in Devils Hole) Date started: August 12, 2014 Size: 179 acres Containment: 0 percent Total Personnel: 23 Current Events: Lightning storms early in the week started several new fires on the Klamath National Forest. One of these—the Man Fire—started in the Marble Mountain Wilderness on August 12. The fire is at the head of the Wooley Creek drainage, an area the locals call Devil’s Hole. A type 3 incident management team started managing the fire for full suppression on August 13. For two hours yesterday afternoon two helicopters dropped water on the fire perimeter. A ten-person wildland fire module arrived today. They will be going into the wilderness to ground truth what fire managers observed yesterday on a reconnaissance flight. Their mission will be to assess options for access, constructing line, and establishing safety zones. The terrain around the fire is extremely rugged, steep, and remote, without easy access. Firefighters will make use of natural barriers to confine the fire within the wilderness, and when it is practical and safe, they will construct direct fireline. They will continue to use helicopters in an effort to keep the fire from getting established in the confluence of the Big Elk Fork and Wooley Creek. Weather Conditions / Weather Behavior: The trend for the next couple days will be warming and drying. The very dry fuels outside the fire perimeter are receptive to spot fires, but the winds will be mainly light for today and tomorrow. That should limit the chance of the fire spotting and spreading significantly. Closure Order No. 14-05-751: Salmon Scott Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest The area closure is in effect from August 16, 2014, until the Log and Man Fires are declared out. The closure begins at the intersection of Shelly Fork Trail (Forest Trail No. 5527) and the boundary of the Klamath National Forest. It continues northerly along the National Forest boundary to its intersection with the Marble Mountain Wilderness boundary, following it west to Rye Patch Trail (Forest Trail No. 5560) and then continuing west to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) (Forest Trail No. 2000). The closure follows the PCT south to Haypress Trail (Forest Trail No. 5557) continuing westerly to the Wooly Creek Trail (Forest Trail No. 5558) following it south to the Salmon Scott River Ranger District boundary. The closure continues east along the Salmon Scott River Ranger District boundary to the Pacific Crest Trail, following it east to the Shelly Fork Trail and then back to the starting point. A portion of the Pacific Crest Trail in the Marble Mountain Wilderness is closed from Shelly Fork Trail north to Rye Patch (Paradise Lake) Trail.
