KNOW THY SAGARS FACE - (2): What is seen around Sagar is the resurrected palaeolandscape of the Vindhyans that was interrupted when it was in its mature stage of erosional development by the flood eruptions. Quite a lot of the overlying volcanics has been erosionally removed and so the rosy pink quartzite ridges are seen sticking their necks out of the black basaltic valley-fills and plains. It is interesting to note that even while both the rocks are essentially horizontal, the landforms still show some subtle differences -- the mesas and buttes present on the volcanics are totally absent over the quartzite ridges and the scarps present in the quartzites are not to be seen in the volcanics. The series of diagrams and photographs illustrate these points.
