KNOW YOUR PEOPLE AND LANGUAGE - LESSON 2 Igbos are one of the largest, progressive, self-determined, cultural and most influential ethnic groups in Nigeria; spread across all spheres of world, engaged as entrepreneurs, educationists professionals and farmers. Most of the crops found in Igbo land ranges from Yam, Cassava, vegetable leafs, corn, mangos, oranges, banana, plantain, palm oil and cocoyam respectively. The Igbo were a politically fragmented group; having “variations in culture, styles, attire, tradition and religious practices”. They organize themselves in “clans, lineage, village affiliation, and dialect”. Most of the Igbo communities are ruled by EZE (Kings), Igwes, Ndinze, Umunna, Umuada, Umu Okpou, Ndiaka jiofor and sometimes the priest of the shrine who are responsible for the smooth running of the communities. Igbo language linguistically is very interesting, derived from a group of languages commonly found in West Africa, the Kwa languages. It is based on pitch, vocal inflections, and context when defining the meaning of a word. A single word can have numerous meanings depending on how, when and what is been expressed. Idioms and proverbs play an important role in the Igbo language. Igbo language has over approximately 60 million with 20 different dialects of speakers who mostly live in Nigeria and primarily come from the Igbo descent. Igbo language is a tonal language with three distinctive low, high and medium tones which determines the meaning of a given word. The language has distinctive characteristics which have been described as vowel harmony; which is a combination of two alphabets to form words. The Igbo developed their traditional number system long before their contact with the Europeans and the alphabets and numbering system is been used till date in all Igbo communities. We shall at this point look at Igbo Alphabets and Pronunciations. The Igbo Alphabet is made up of 36 letters, 8 vowels, 19 consonants (Ndakorita Udume) and 9 blends. a b ch d e f g gb gh gw h i ị j k kp kw l m n ń nw ny o ọ p r s sh t u ụ v w y z
