KNOW YOUR RIGHTS LISTEN: One of the tricks the police will pull is they will write you a citation or write you a warning or even give you a verbal warning. They will hand your license back and may say you are free to go or have a nice day or drive careful. Then once you go to roll up your window if you are in your car or once you go to open the door of the police car if you are in the police car, the officer will say, Do you mind if I ask you just one more question/mind of I run a drug dog around your car/mind if I ask you just a few more questions? The answer is NO! Never agree to that in any way. You tell the guy no and continue on leaving. If you are not sure if you can leave, simply ask, Are you detaining me or am I free to go? Now, they love to not give you a simple direct answer to this. Unless the officer specifically says you are NOT free to go, then continue to leave. If he orders you to stop, then you are being detained. If you are being detained keep your mouth shut and refuse any consent to search. EVEN IF the police are mean and EVEN IF the police say we can do this the easy way or the hard way, and EVEN IF they make all kinds of threats and EVEN IF they call you ugly names, keep your mouth shut and do not consent to a search.
