KNOWING THAT ALL IS WELL When winter arrives, She collects her sweaters From the drawer, a coin purse Full of nickels surprises her, Last years hair clip, A photo of her mother in the snow; She takes out her leather gloves, Her boots with fur tops, Her pink and blue knit hat, Her stack of jeans When winter softens our windows, The grass turns grey And birds pick at the feed, the sycamore tightens in the cold The days have become years And the seasons, a memory of the last When I come home from the dark street, The house smells of pine needles, Cocido, last nights perfume And she is warm on the couch, With her quilt and little black dog snout Under her palm I go to the fireplace, Twist newspaper for kindle, A bundle of last year’s firewood Sits next to a small statue Of Quetzalcoatl, Summers wooden picnic basket, A toy left by a grandchild, I light a fire, knowing That all is well © John Martinez 2012 All Rights Reserved
