KNOXVILLE, Tennessee -- Knoxville Fire Department crews put out a fire Monday afternoon at a North Knoxville building that was being converted into a deli. Crews were called to 2500 N. Central Street, around 1:36 p.m. Monday afternoon. The first crews on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the behind a garage door near the rear of the building. Firefighters were able to get in by removing the roll up door and pointing their fire nozzles at the building. Knoxville Fire Department spokesman D.J. Corcoran says a family lives in the apartment space on top and were in the process of turning the bottom part into a deli. A young girl was the first person to detect the fire. She ran next door and called 911. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected.
