KNSG SPENDS $1.2 MILLION ON TRAINING MEDICAL STUDENTS IN EGYPT - KWANKWASO Kano state government has committed about $1.2 million to train 90 citizens of sponsor 90 indigenes of the state to study health related degrees at Mansoura University and 6th October University in Egypt. The state governor, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, who disclosed this during a visit to the students in Cairo, explained that the aim is to address the shortage of medical personnel in public hospitals in the State. The governor noted that 50 out of the 90 students are at the 6th October University, pursuing degrees in medicine, while the remaining 40 are studying for bachelor’s degrees in Nursing and Midwifery at Mansoura University. Governor Kwankwaso disclosed that on completion of their studies, the medical doctors will be deployed to public hospitals in the state while the nurses and midwifes will be posted to the new School of Nursing, Madobi and the College of Midwifery, Gezawa to teach. He said his administration gave out full overseas scholarships to a total of 300 male and female secondary school leavers from Kano, to study medicine and pharmacy in different universities in Sudan, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and India. “My visit to this place is to physically assess facilities, the general environment of your universities in addition to your welfare especially so as to justify the investment in your education. I want you to remain steadfast, loyal and determined to excel so as to justify the huge State resources committed for your training”. “I am satisfied with my personal assessment of your progress as a result of my visit. Today I feel more than ever before happy to see our dreams coming to fruition”, he stated. The governor announced that the state government has concluded plans to engage some medical doctors from Egypt to work in general hospitals across Kano for the general improvement of services in the health sector. Meanwhile, Governor Kwankwaso has visited 99 medical students from Kano state, studying in four different universities in Sudan. The governor also paid a courtesy visit to the governor of Khartoum state, Dr. Abdurrahman Al- Khidir in his office. Al-Khidir underscored firmness of the Sudanese-Nigerian relations in various fields, pointing to contribution of exchange of visits to cementing of ties between the two countries. Governor of Kwankwaso, on his part, thanked the government of Khartoum state for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation, referring to strong historical and popular relations which link Nigeria and Sudan.
