KOLKATA: On Monday, Border Security Force (BSF) troops of the 152Bn posted at BOP Hakimpur in North 24-Parganas trapped a smuggler and seized nearly 1.8 kg gold being brought from Bangladesh to India. The gold has been valued at nearly Rs 47.52 lakh. The border where this seizure was made is riverine in nature and extremely porous. Acting on specific information, the troops planned a special operation around 11 am and intercepted 45- year-old Ziad Ali Gazi of Sardarpara village, Darkhanda in the Swarupnagar police station area. A thorough search led to the detection and seizure of three gold biscuits weighing nearly 1,800 grams. Gazi has been handed over to the police and the gold deposited with the customs department for further processing, a BSF official said. In 2014 alone, the South Bengal Frontier of the BSF seized more than 88.49 kg of gold valued at nearly Rs 24.80 crore. The BSF also succeeded in apprehending 38 smugglers in this connection.
