KONG IS STILL KING - The visual wizardry of stop-motion special effects master Willis OBrien, brought the prehistoric denizens of Skull Island and its monarch, a giant gorilla named King Kong, to vivid life in a memorable film that has frightened, astonished and captivated generations of film audiences. The climactic scene of Kong perishing atop the Empire State building, is one of the screens most iconic moments. And to think...it was all accomplished with 18 tall miniature models.... The film did not receive a single Academy Award nomination, thought it was one the years biggest grossing films. Willis OBrien not receive any recognition for his Kong visual magic -- the Best Special Effects category was not created until 1939 -- but his work on 1949s MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, assisted by a young Ray Harryhausen, did corral an Oscar. youtu.be/Nh-gUUsvS08
