KONZA IS IN MAKUENI, SENATE TEAM TOLD KONZA City is in Makueni county and not Machakos, Senate Lands committee on Tuesday learned. The map presented before the committee chaired by Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti showed that as per the 1992 Provincial and District Act, the techno city is in Makueni. The Act, written in words, places the location in Makueni but the corresponding national map of the region place the location in Machakos county. Machakos and Makueni counties have been laying claim on the city. According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission maps, which were also presented before the committee by IEBC chairman Issack Hassan, Konza is in Kilome constituency, Makueni county. “We need to comply with the Act and change the map accordingly or amend the Act to comply with the Map,” Hassan said. Committee vice chairman George Khaniri said: “The best way to go about resolving this matter is to draw the map afresh rather than changing the Act, but for now we must go with the law.” Lands Cabinet secretary Charity Ngilu said no county should claim ownership of Konza City. “Konza is a national city whether in Makueni or in Machakos,” she said. It emerged that governors from the two counties have signed a memorandum of understanding committing to respect the outcome of a mediation process. Ngilu expressed relief at the Memorandum of Understanding by the two governors. She invited all stakeholders for a meeting next Wednesday to chart the way forward.
