KPLT TO LAY DOWN ARMS, DECLARES CEASEFIRE Guwahati: Ahead of Independence Day, Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT) has decided to lay down arms. The insurgent group is responsible for recurrent killings and violence in Karbi Anglong district. In a letter issued on Monday, KPLT chairman D Kramsa said the outfit would fight for the creation of a separate state by becoming part of mainstream society. The outfit has announced it will abstain from boycotting Independence Day celebrations and appealed to people to observe the day. However, Kramsa said it is up to the government to accept KPLTs offer for peace. KPLT will look forward to the governments response. We will decide on further action according to the governments response, Kramsa added. The KPLT chairman also said armed struggle against the government is a futile and unproductive way of achieving statehood. KPLT, floated in January 2011, is behind many of the terror activities in Karbi Anglong district. The outfit was formed with 25 cadres of Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front-Anti Talk Faction (KLNLF-ATF), which, in turn, is a breakaway faction of Karbi Longri National Liberation Front which laid down arms in 2010. Many of KPLTs top leaders have been killed in encounters with the Army and security forces. In May this year, six KPLT members, including its commander-in-chief Kangthor Teron, were killed in a joint operation by the Army and police in Karbi Anglong. Last month, security forces dealt a blow to the outfit and arrested many of its leaders, including its general secretary. KPLT has lost many comrades in its struggle for a separate state. Considering our present political scenario, waging a war against the state would not serve our interest. A democratic process, with political and diplomatic solutions, can serve us better, Kramsa said in a statement. -TNN
