#KU15 Life Particle The beginning, the end The beauty, the destruction The calm, the rough The nutrient, the mineral The stream, the ocean The natural, the engineered The flat, the wavy The ice, the vapor The freedom, the constraint The sportsmanship dream, the natural disaster The energy, the polluted The small ripple, the tsunami The rain, the snow The thirst, the waste The depths, the waterfalls The cold, the hot The drool, the tear The spring bloom, the drought The fresh, the salted The clear, the cloudy The fun, the frightening The shallow puddle, the harsh rapids The explored, the unknown The end, the beginning --------------- When I first heard of Kirk Ursos passing in my hotel room in Washington DC in the wee hours of the morning on August 5th, the word water was stuck in my head. I didnt know why, but I started a note on my iPhone with things that reminded me of water and then added an opposite of each thing that dealt with water. I didnt understand why back then on that terrible morning, but I followed my thoughts. I have come back to this note many times, reread it, smiled, laughed and cried; but usually added a new line to it. Just recently on a west coast trip I was reading it on the plane trying not to get emotional and break down on the plane. Then it came to me: the water cycle. Water starts out in the ground; then a lake, stream or river; then is evaporated into the air; becomes and travels as a cloud; then turns to rain or snow and then falls back to the earth to be reabsorbed by the ground and starts the journey all over again. Through this cycle each drop of water has an effect on many different people and things, from a positive effect of quenching a thirst or providing energy or a negative effect of a burn or a destructive tsunami. Each water particle though has a journey in life, just like Kirk Urso did. Luckily as humans we can choose if we want to have a positive effect or a negative effect on each human we come into contact with. Kirk Urso always chose to bring a smile and a laugh to each and every person his life particle brought to him. The best part of associating water with Kirk is that water is never destroyed, it is everlasting, just as Kirk Urso is in my life and all those his life touched personally or through the people like me who are a better person now because of knowing him, than we were before. This poem is dedicated to his lovely mother Sandy, father Mike, and brother Kyle. We miss you Kirk, but always know that you are right there next to me with that smirk and a witty joke!
