KWANKWASO CAUTIONS JONATHAN ON NEW CONSTITUTION Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano state has cautioned President Goodluck Jonathan on the dangerous consequences of the new Constitution he is purportedly trying to smuggle in for Nigeria, following the recently concluded 2014 National Constitution Conference. He said the planned introduction of the “New Constitution” may have adverse repercussion on the unity of the nation, alleging that already, some parts of the country have flags other than the constitutionally acknowledged green-white-green flag. The governor recalled that he told journalists before the commencement of the Conference, that President Jonathan may introduce a new constitution, many people thought it was a joke but has now become a reality. His words, “I received many calls from Abuja and from the Conference’s delegate that the 2014 New Constitution has been drafted and confirmed. Of course all people that love this country and really understand the situation we are today and the likely consequences of another brand New Constitution which the Presidency wants to use to start eight years beginning from 2015 certainly is a very dangerous development. Gov. Kwankwaso who made the assertion during an interview with journalists in his office in Kano on Wednesday lamented that those stakeholders that should care about the dangers of drafting a new and unnecessary constitution for the country are busy trying to perpetuate themselves in power. “And those that should care (presidency), those that should understand, are very busy on the air working and helping themselves to remain (in power) forever. I always remind people that when the issue of insecurity started in the Northeast, little did many people know that one day it would come to this part of the country. Now we share it, is also in the North central and now it is crossing border to the south. I am sure you must be aware that in some parts of this country now, they have flags other than green white green and this is terribly, terribly unfortunate” Kwankwaso warned. He argued that the fact that the Federal government is bent on embarking upon what he described as “a Kangaroo referendum” to favour the draft constitution and inflate figures to support it, so as to force it on Nigerians. “I appreciate the elasticity of our people and I believe that elasticity has a limit if they keep up pulling and pulling it would come to a time when they will not endure any more. That is why I think the good people of this country should speak because some of the consequences people are now seeing will affect everybody”, he maintained.” According to him, “The theory of the higher it goes the cooler it becomes may be is applicable in the Presidency. Those that are very high are at a cool atmosphere while the masses and people of this country are suffering from poverty and illiteracy especially from this part of the country”. “Of course the issue of insecurity: everyday people are being killed, everyday properties are being destroyed, we hear that people of Borno are now on hills and forests some are in Chad, many are in Cameron thousands are in Niger and nobody is talking about them”. “What they are talking is how to extend the duration of the tenure of Mr. President to life presidency. And it is very sad that this is happening now. I am one of those that have travelled across the world and I have an opportunity to read a lot especially in the areas of History and political situations across the world. What is happening today in Nigeria, if 10 percent of it can happen anywhere in the world I don’t think that leadership can’t stand and is very dangerous to all of us” Kwankwaso asserted. The governor, who expressed worry in reflecting the minds of the ordinary people because of the current level of sincerity which he noted has never been witnessed in Northern Nigeria before, said the people of Kano have resorted to prayers for divine intervention. Governor Kwankwaso commended the Northern delegates to the National Constitutional Conference that shunned what he described as “so called dollars” that some people are distributing now in Abuja, and work tirelessly to save the country from imminent collapse.
