KWANKWASO DISTRIBUTES 100 TRICYCLES TO MEAT HAULERS Kano state government has procured and distributed 100 customized tricycles worth N60, 480, 000, to members of the state Meat Haulers Association to ensure a functional meat delivery system. The tricycles were given out as concessionary loan under a special empowerment scheme, on a 50 percent subsidy, payable over a period of 18 months. Speaking during the occasion held at the Government House lawn in Kano, the state governor, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso explained that the initiative is part of measures to ensure that meat transportation and processing are healthier and environment friendly. In addition, the governor stated that the scheme will among other things “enable beneficiaries to carry more meat and do more trips, thus, making more daily returns as well as greatly reduce traffic congestion and accidents occasioned by pushcart and motorcycle meat carriers.” Governor Kwankwaso said all the beneficiaries of the tricycle loan have been trained by the relevant regulatory authorities on how to manage their business, traffic rules and regulations as well as basic maintenance of the tricycles. Consequently, he announced that the state government will ban the use of pushcarts and motorcycles for transporting and distributing meat in Kano metropolis, explaining that the relevant government agencies have already been directed to ensure compliance on this major policy. This, he maintained, is in conformity with his administration’s effort “to transform Kano into an exemplary mega city, a tourist destination and the preferred choice of investment”. Also during the occasion, the governor presented 19 motorized boats worth the sum of N15, 732, 000, to 19 fishermen associations, comprising 120 members. The effort, Government Kwankwaso said, is a deliberate strategy to sanitize fisheries resource management in the state. Similarly, he presented empowerment packages worth N13, 320, 000 to 120 second batch graduants from Magaga Fisheries Skills Acquisition Center, to afford the beneficiaries become self employed and eventually become employers of labour. Governor Kwankwaso also distributed 4, 000 crates of table egg to 40 selected secondary schools in the state. The eggs were donated by Grand Cereals Company Ltd, to add to the nutritional value of the students’ food intake. The governor thanked the company for the gesture hoping others will emulate the shining example.
