KaaviyaThalaivan Movie Review by Common Man: Kaaviya Thalaivan is a Big Budget historical fiction film which happens in the backdrop of early 20th Century. Movie is directed by Vasanthabalan, who gave wonderful realistic movies such as Veyil and Angaadi Theru. His last movie Aravaan was an experimental attempt and was well received by critics & only certain section of the audience. Music by A.R.R was the USP for this movie & created some expectation for this movie. Let us whether Kaaviya Thalaivan manages to satisfy the critics & Common Man at the same time in this review. Story: It revolves around the rivalry between Siddharth & Prithviraj in a small drama troupe in the backdrop of early 20th Century. Story will be in the likes of Iruvar, which revolves around rivalry between Mohanlal & Prakashraj in the backdrop of 1950’s. Siddharth – He is one of the very few actors who act in various genres. His last 3 movies Udhayam NH4, TVSK, Jigarthanda were completely different from each other. Kaaviya Thalavian is one of the rare movies, which provides opportunity for actors to perform in each & every scene. Siddharth has given his best. Prithviraj – In the audio launch, even Siddharth mentioned that Prithviraj is far better actor than him and has given his best in the movie. It stands true. Prithviraj definitely impresses the audience with his superb acting skills. Vedhika – Paradesi was turning point in her career and she has yet again chosen a good movie, which gives excellent opportunity for her to perform. Her intro scene was one of the best for heroines. Anaika Soti, Nassar, Thambi Ramaiah, Singam Puli, Mansoor Ali Khan, etc have done complete justice to their role. Cinematography by Nirav Shah, Art Direction by Santhanam, Music by A.R.R, and Editing by Praveen were Awesome. Definitely, it is one of the technically brilliant movies in Tamil Cinema. Nirav & Santhanam makes sure that each & every scene looks authentic and gives the feeling of 1930’s. Movie would have been incomplete, without A.R.R. His Songs & BGM’S acts as the real hero for the movie. Praveen has made sure that Periodic Movie doesn’t run for 3 hours with his cuts. Director Vasanthabalan is one of the very few directors, who takes realistic movies in Tamil Cinema. He has to be appreciated a lot for taking a movie, which is based on Theater Artists. He has not made any compromise for commercial movie fans, which will result in mixed reviews for the movie. Title credits of the movie was unique. Story starts in the 10th minute and unfortunately, audience could judge the complete story at the earlier stage itself. Vasanthabalan has fully concentrated on the 2 characterizations of the movie alone & didnt compromise by having twits or exploring other areas in pre-independent era. Hence, post interval, the scenes were too predictable & cliché. Overall, Kaaviya Thalaivan is one of the technically brilliant movies in recent times, but could have been better with an engaging story & screenplay First half - 3 / 5 & Second Half – 2 / 5 Rating of this movie by Common Man – 2.5 / 5 Rating for this movie for period movie loves, A.R.R. Hardcore fans, cult movie lovers – 3.25 / 5
