Kaavu are “groves” hosting a small cult shrine such as those to Bhagavati (Kali) . This form of Hinduism actually more widespread than the big set piece temples. For example in 19th century Kerala there were said to be 15,000 snake kaavus in Travacore district alone. (see achyuta menon Kali worship in Kerala ) This form of worship in open air groves and small shrines is very ancient, and pre-brahmanic. Ive been reading this in connection with my Isis In India. The goddess Isis goes through various transformations over the years, becoming an form of Kali but without the standard ritual practices such as Samghakal known elsewhere in Kerala.
