Kabwe taxi driver jailed six years By KASONDE KASONDE- LUSAKA High Court Judge Chalwe Mchenga has sentenced a Kabwe taxi driver to six years imprisonment for causing the death of another driver. Daniel Muleyi, 27, of Kabwe’s Katondo caused the death of Gibson Mulenga on October 20, 2010. Facts before court were that the two fought over a client and that in the confusion, Muleyi hit Mulenga in the head. Mulenga reported the matter to Chowa Police and later sought treatment at Kabwe General Hospital after suffering head injuries, and was admitted to the health institution until October 31st, 2010 when he died. A post-mortem was carried out which revealed that Mulenga died of head injuries and later Muleyi was arrested and charged with one count of murder. Mr Justice Mchenga however reduced the sentence from murder to manslaughter after examining the matter and Muleyi pleaded guilty. In mitigation through Kamo Sifukwe from the legal aid Muleyi asked for lenience from the court as he was a first offender who did not waste the courts time in admitting to the charge. Ms Sifukwe said Muleyi was a bread winner with a wife and two children and had been in custody from October 15, 2013 and had since repented.
