Kadayawan Festival 2014: Awes from Local Tourists” By Kris Mee M. Trujillo Colorful floral floats. Amazing cultural dances. Awesome evening parties. Davao City indeed made the Kadayawan Festival the festival of all festivals. Aside from those, there were still things and events happened that created a big impact to all Dabawenyos and tourist, whether local or not. The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting Madayaw, from the Dabawenyo word dayaw, meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living. (Wikipedia) One of the highlighted events of the Kadayawan Festival is the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan. According to Pinoy Adveturista’s blog, Indak-indak, which literally means stomping ones feet on the ground, is a competition of different tribes-participants showcasing choreographed dance inspired by Mindanaos indigenous traditions, legends, myths and cultural events. The Indak-indak sa Kadalanan made a full blast as the start of the Saturday weekend, August 16, 2014, of the ongoing Kadayawan Festival. Loud bang of gongs, colorful costumes and the graceful dances of the participants waved all the audience as they witnessed the parade of different native tribes of Davao City. “It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like it before. It was very colorful and very amazing. My first time to witness such event here in Davao is indeed worth the time I traveled.” Cherry Mae Gayo, 19, a management student of De La Salle John Bosco College from Mangagoy, Bislig City said. There were 17 entries who joined and participated on the said events. The City of Mati was awarded to be the grand champion of the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan out of the 17. Christian School of Polomolok follows as 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up is the Cabantian National High School, 3rd Runner-up is the Sta. Ana National High School Performing Arts and the 4th Runner-up is the San Luiz National High School. (Pinoy Adventurista, 2014) Another highlighted event was the Pamulak Kadayawan. The Pamulak Kadayawan is a float parade featuring Davao Regions flowers and fruits. The event happened last August 17, 2014, Sunday morning, with the parade of different floats from different sectors that sponsors and helped made the Kadayawan festival a success. “Ayos kayo ang mga floats. Wa ko magdahum na ato diay ila pasabot na pamulak kadayawan. Abi lang nako naay mga iparade lang nga designs sa bulak tapos naa dayun mga artista pero wa ko mag expect saako nakita. Maski wala mga artista, wala gihapun ko nadisappoint kay na-amaze jud ko sa mga floats na mga bulak diay ang nakapagwapa ug ayos ato. Thumbs up sa Davao!” Peter Paul Penanueva, a local tourist from Mangagoy, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, said. (The floats were so nice. I didn’t expect of what I heard and see for myself what the Pamulak Kadaywan really is. I thought they would just present and parade the different flower designs and some national artist would also join but I didn’t really expect what I saw. Despite the disappearance of the artists, I was still not disappointed yet I am amazed of the big floats comprised with different flowers. Thumbs up to Davao City!) Among all the entries of the floats, the sectors that won are as follows according to Pinoy Adventures: ALTERNATIVE: Champion - Bgy. Kapitan Tomas 1st Runner-up - Davao Horse Club 2nd Runner-up - Club VeeDub Davao 3rd Runner-up - Philippine Daily Inquirer 4th Runner-up - Hydie Jereos TRADITIONAL: Champion - International Pharmaceutical Inc. 1st Runner-up – Concentrix 2nd Runner-up - Bgy. Sta. Cruz, Talikud Island 3rd Runner-up - University of the Philippines Los Baños Alumni Assoc. 4th Runner-up - Ines Flower Shop Finally, night parties and concert sums up all the happiness and enjoyment of Dabawenyos. The concert of the Parokya ni Edgar last Saturday was one of the climax of the festival. Fans of the renowned band gather around and awed when the lead singer, Chito Miranda, and the rest of the band themselves performed at the Freedom Park, Roxas street, Davao city. “Ayos kaayo! Idol kayo Chito! Wala ko mag expect na naa jud ang Parokya sa Davao kay ang amo ra jud gianhi kay ang indak-indak ra lagi pero ang Parokya? Bonus na kayo! Worth it amo 6-hours travel grabe! Happy Kadayawan jud!” Maribel Guerra and boyfriend, Harvey Semancio, USEP students from Bislig City, said as they witness the live performance of the Parokya ni Edgar for the first time. (Amazing! Chito is such an idol! I didn’t expect that Parokya ni Edgar would come because honestly, we thought we would just witness the Indak-Indak but the Parokya? Such a bonus! Our 6 hours of travel is worth it. Happy Kadayawan indeed!”) Another event was the Kadayawan Invasion. A night party sponsored by the City Government of Davao held at the Crocodile Park, Maa, Davao City with renowned guest DJs and artist from manila. It was indeed a successful event despite of the joke of Mr. Ramon Bautista, Artist/Comedian, that Davao women are hipon (shrimp) meaning they only have the curves, not the face. Nevertheless, justice was made when Vice Mayor Duterte and former mayor, Sara Duterte, exclaimed their anger for the joke and made Bautista do a public apology in front of the people who attended the said event. “The event was still a blast despite of Ramon Bautista’s joke. He’s not a good example of an artist though he’s a comedian but still, he should be sensitive and have some decency because in the first place, he’s still just a plain tourist just like the rest of us. But still, the event was awesome and I never regretted travelling miles from Mangagoy just to get here.” Janine Jane Escudero, from Mangagoy, Bislig City, said. The Kadayawan Festival indeed made a great impact on tourist. Not only foreign tourist but also local tourist such as people from various places of the Philippines. Even though they are from the inside the country, visiting places, such as Davao City, and witnessing different festivals, would surely make move and awed same as foreign tourists do. All in all, the Kadayawan Festival was worth every penny, worth the travelling time and worth to watch and participated. It captured the attention of all people and made a great impact in them that Davao City has indeed a lot to offer. Despite its modernity, Davao still showed how they preserved their culture from history to present and, if possible, for the future generations to witness and discover.
