Kai Woolf the standout on Day 2 of Hurley SA Junior Champs in Jeffreys Bay Kai Woolf, the 11 year-old ‘supergrom’ from Jeffreys Bay, was the standout performer on Day 2 of the Hurley SA Junior Champs as the country’s best 17-and-under girls took centre stage at SA’s premier junior surfing event. Woolf, who won the SA U13 Girls title in Durban as a 9 year-old in 2011, revelled in the clean one metre offshore waves of her home break today and, surfing with a maturity that belies her age, posted a pair of counting scores in the excellent category totalling an outstanding 17.0 out of 20. That saw the diminutive goofy-foot leapfrog past Max Armstrong’s heat tally of 14.75, recorded during the U17 Boy’s heats yesterday, into the lead for the Oakley Highest Heat Score award and the R3 000 that goes with it. Further performances of this standard will see Woolf become a strong contender for the Hurley Surfer of the Contest presented by All Aboard Travel and its prize of a trip to Bali valued at R20 000. She advanced directly to Round 3 along with Eastern Province teammate Kirsty McGillivray, fellow Round 1 heat winners Kelly Medley (SKZN), Sne Makhuba (Dev Academy), defending U13 champ Sophie Bell (KZNC) and their respective runners-up. The second day started out with Round 1 the U17 Girls followed by the U15’s and U13’s before the repercharge rounds for U17 and U15 Boys took to the waves as the wind switched to a cross-shore Southerly direction, and ended with the U13 Girl’s repercharge round. Enthusiastic support from their teammates on the beach saw defending team champions and hosts Eastern Province again demonstrate the benefits of local knowledge with all three girls in each age category finishing in the top two of their respective heats and all their boys in the U17 and U15 divisions safely through to Round 3. Perennial contenders Western Province, the 2011 team champions, and KwaZulu-Natal Central (KZNC) also kept their challenge for the Freedom Cup alive with all their team members still in contention. The buzz on the beach was dominated by the potent frontal system sweeping across the country which is forecast to generate near gale-force winds and open ocean swells of over eight metres in height in the Jeffreys Bay area on Friday and Saturday. However, surf prediction guru Steve Pike from Wavescape says that while the event organisers are advised to secure the world class infrastructure at the event site, the predominantly Westerly direction of the swell will mean that the waves sweeping into the Lower Point are unlikely to exceed two metres and that they could be ideal for the finals on Sunday. The Hurley SA Junior Champs runs until Sunday 29 September when the provincial team accumulating the most points is awarded the coveted Freedom Trophy and the individual winners in the U17, U15 and U13 Boy’s and Girl’s divisions are crowned the 2013 South African surfing champions.
