KaiYin Update: KaiYin is having a rough week. She is 14 years and 9 months old. Shes survived 7 cancer surgeries and is almost 5 years cancer free. That being said... she has a few new lumps that I keep having tested, but they vet has told me at this point I am wasting money. Even if results come back as cancer, she is too old for surgery. So now Im just doing my best to make sure she knows I adore her. She loves to meet other doggies in the park... and shell walk forever just to sniff one more leaf or catch one more ray of sunshine... but when I get her home I have to carry her up the stairs. Recently shes been losing control of her bladder in her sleep. The past 36 hours she has been avoiding food... but she is drinking water like crazy. Yesterday and ALL night last night she was having terrible tummy issues. I stayed up with her all night to monitor her breathing and take her outside (to be sick) about every 90 minutes. She sleeps deeply for about an hour, and then she cries and paces to go outside. Poor pup is sick as a dog. I was able to get her in to the vet this morning. They ran a bunch of labwork (results should be in tomorrow). The physical exam didnt go very well. She has some pretty serious tummy/abdominal pain. The labwork will determine if the next step will be xrays vs ultrasounds. The vet is trying to determine if KaiYin has either more Mast Cell Tumors (shes had 6 removed already in her lifetime) or if she has widespread cancer throughout her insides. Either way, KaiYin is too old for anesthesia and more surgery. So they are basically trying to determine if she has something that can be treated with meds / chemo, or if she is at a point that we just make her as happy and comfortable as we can for the remainder of her time with us. The vet also tried to talk about euthanasia... and I told her that is NOT happening. KaiYin will go when she is ready, and hopefully in my arms in our home. I mean... Im not going to let her suffer, but she certainly isnt ready to go yet. She has the best personality and Spirit ever! If I would have put her to sleep when I found her first tumor at the age of 3 years old... I would have missed out on 12 magnificent years with her! Okay... I need to get some rest. They gave KaiYin a shot that should calm her nausea for the next 24 hours, then I need to give her meds twice a day for five days. Since she isnt eating dry dog food, wet dog food or treats, I made her a batch of white rice and cottage cheese. She gobbled it right up! She is now asleep on the couch, snoring, and hopefully actually resting. Ive only slept about 2 hours in the last 36 hours... so Im gonna curl up on the couch with her now and take a dognap with my sweetheart. Matthew should be back from his Seattle work trip tomorrow mid-morning. Until then, Im on round-the-clock sick puppy duty. Thanks so much for all of your prayers and puppy love.
