Kais cub scout pack was asked to help out today at the Congressional Medal of Honor Day at the Gladewater memorial cemetery. Master SGT. Travis E. Watkins is the only known recipient in East Texas. I sat and listened to the ceremony (while trying to control my wild child), and as I listened to the things that SGT. Watkins did to receive this honor I had to fight back the tears. The sacrifice and selflessness is uncomprehendable. As the officiator spoke about the importance of thanking our service members he mentioned that the service men and women of the Vietnam war deserve our gratitude the most. They were told not to wear their uniforms or they would be spit upon, and that many would not show them respect. I began crying, I thought of my Grandfather and how he was never thanked for his service until Marissas class did a veterans pageant, that when he returned home he was handed a coffee and doughnut. Is this really how we are going to show our respect? There was a sign posted there today that read Freedom is not free. Remember those that have given part of themselves for complete strangers and thank them more than just on the holidays that we have because of them. Regardless of if we agree with war or the cause of it, shouldnt we thank those that are keeping it out of our land? The Mothers, wives, and children that may never see their fathers until death, dont they deserve our love and respect also? If we lose our patriotism and gratitude to our service members, we will be doing our children and childrens children (and so on) a huge injustice. Thank a veteran today, even if you have to go out of your way. THANK THEM! (There are so many of you to tag, so if I missed ya, I do apologize. It doesnt mean I dont respect or appreciate you).
