Kaladan News December 5, 2014 Government abruptly takes decision to shift Rohingya refugee camps Cox‘s Bazar, Bangladesh: Government abruptly took decision to shift Rohingya refugee camps---Nayapara and Kutupalang---from existing places of Ukhiya and Teknaf, which are tourist centers of Cox’s Bazar district, according to a local Bangla newspaper of December 4. “Many local people see that the refugee camps are an obstacle of economic development of these areas, so it is necessary to shift the refugees to other new place.” It is learnt that Rohingyas enter Bangladesh from various points and take shelter in refugee camps after crossing the Burma-Bangladesh border. After penetrating to Bangladesh, they get haven in refugee camps and this causes encourage to the refugees and spread to other places. As a result, the local people demands to the government to shift the refugee camps to other suitable place, official said. According to official, it is learnt that the refugee camps will shift to an island of Noakhali district, which is about 500 acres of Kash ( wild land) land. The refugees will get many kinds of benefit there. On November 8, when PM Sheikh Hasina visited to Chittagong, she told the officials that government had decided to shift Rohingya refugee camps to Noakhali from Cox’s Bazar district,the paper said more. Later, it was informed to Ministers by Chittagong Commissioner by letter. In this letter, the commissioner mentioned that PM ordered to shift estimated registered 38,000 Rohingya refugees (from Nayapara and Kutupalong camps) to Noakhali. Besides, over 100.000 unregistered refugees also live in Leda of Teknaf, Nayapara and Kutupalong of Ukhiya, according to official. It is learnt that there are about 274 km border with Burma. Rohingya penetrate to Bangladesh through jungle border and trough Naff River and sea route. The old refuges and local people give help to the new comers and taking their help the refugees went to other places of Cox’s Bazar and live there, according to local people. We do not want Rohingyas to live in Cox’s Bazar after crossing the Burma-Bangladesh border. As a result, we took decision to shift refugee camps from tourist center of Ukhiya and Teknaf, according to official. We also meet labor crisis in Cox’s Bazar as 50 percent of Rohingya laborers and the local people prefer to hire Rohingyas for works because of cheap wages, a local leader said from Ukhiya. “We want to send all Rohingyas to Burma who are illegally living in Bangladesh not only registered Rohingya refugees,” said a local elder from Ukhiya. It is necessary to clear Rohingyas from Cox’s Bazar and also will be good not only for residents of Cox’s Bazar but also for the whole nation of Bangladesh. Besides, the illegal trade such as---Yaba smuggling will be stopped, said leader Giyas Uddin of Cox’s Bazar society Another Cox’s Bazar Civil Society leader said, the main problem is Rohingya, they are also involve in many illegal crimes, local people do not get jobs because of Rohingyas, if the Rohingyas are transferred to other place, the Rohingyas’ infiltration will be stopped and the economics of the Cox’s Bazar will be developed. Cox’s Bazar district Administrator Mohamed Rohul Amin said, it is necessary to shift Rohingyas from Cox’s Bazar as early as possible. The people of Cox’s Bazar are not involved with crimes, but 80 percent of Rohingyas are involved in crimes. The PM’s decision to shift the Rohingya camps is to be benefited to the people of Cox’s Bazar. When asked one of the refugee leaders named Shaker, he said, “We will meet many difficulties, if the existent camps will be shifted to new place. We do not want to go there because that place is frequently flooded in rainy season. .”##
