Kali Puja also known as Shyama Puja is a festival dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Kali, celebrated on the new moon day of the Hindu month Kartik especially in Bengal. It coincides with the pan-Indian Laksmi Puja day of Diwali. While theBehgalis, Oriyas and Assamese adore goddess Kali on this day the rest of India worships goddess Lakshmi on Diwali. The festival of Kali Puja is an ancient one in Bengal and Assam. She was an aborigine goddess worshipped by the Austric tribals. Later gradually she was incorporated into the Brahminical pantheon. During the time of Sri Chaitanya there was fierce rivalry between the Shaktos viz. Kali worshippers and the Vaishnavs viz. Krishna worshippers in Bengal and Eastern India. Kali Puja gained popularity in the 19th century Bengal, with the Bengali elite; wealthy landowners began patronizing the festival on a grand scale. Along with Durga Puja, now - Kali Puja is the biggest goddess festival in Bengal.
