Kanaka Open mic youtu.be/O2GTHFeN4LM Dont forget to visit Kanaka Open mic this Wednesday September 10th, which promises faces old and new, an eclectic array of live music and a generally fabulous evening! This week I have added a video of 94 year old Raymond Penfield and his band singing Robert Palmers iconic song Addicted to Love. I say iconic because the original release of the song saw the very cool Robert Palmer singing the song, backed up by a faux band consisting of fashion models. Apparently a musician was hired to teach the models basic guitar fingering techniques, but he gave up after about an hour and left. In Raymond Penfields video, his band really play their ukuleles and coconut percussion, actually all of the women are singers and performers, a step up from the automatons that were pretending to play behind Palmer in his video. Also, I love it at 3:08 in the video when Raymond says I dont know if I can handle this!. I went back and looked at Palmers video again, and I can honestly say I prefer the Penfield version, so much more animated and more fun, although in the eighties I must admit that Palmers video held a fascination for me. It was something really different then. The women looked like something from a Patrick Nagel painting,.. but thats a whole other conversation!! You can find us every Wednesday, 5pm - 7.30pm at Kanaka Creek Coffee, #101-24155 102nd Avenue, Maple Ridge, (left at 240th/Lougheed, right on 102nd) Maple Ridge.
