Kanaka Open mic youtu.be/puSkP3uym5k Dont forget to visit Kanaka Open mic this Wednesday March 19th. Lots of music and surprises in store! This week I have added a video of Jake Shimabukuro playing George Harrisons song While my guitar gently weeps on ukulele. Jake was born in Hawaii, and is clearly a ukulele virtuoso. As well as doing amazing cover songs, Jake has written many original compositions and also entire soundtracks for Japanese films. In 2012, an award-winning documentary was released tracking his life, career, and music, entitled Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings. I know that our lovely George Harrison would have been thrilled to hear Jake play his song so beautifully and in such an original way.....or may be not so original? George was no stranger to the ukulele, there are many accounts of him passing out ukuleles at dinner parties in his home, on tour buses and on planes. One of George Harrisons earliest musical influences included George Formby, a very cheeky, music-hall style ukulele player/singer who was very popular in the UK in the 1930s/40s/50s and 60s. I believe the ukulele may have been Georges first musical instrument? (dont quote me on that one!). You can find us every Wednesday, 5pm - 7.30pm at Kanaka Creek Coffee, #101-24155 102nd Avenue, Maple Ridge, (left at 240th/Lougheed, right on 102nd) Maple Ridge. Tel: 604 463 6727 With love, Pam XX The ukulele is the underdog of all instruments, however, I believe it is an instrument of peace. If everyone played the ukulele, the world would definitely be a much happier place - Jake Shimabukuro
