Kankakee County officials are telling voters the public safety - TopicsExpress

Kankakee County officials are telling voters the public safety sales tax will cost an average family $79 per year. School districts, which are also vying for a sales tax increase this November, estimate that the cost will be $158 per year. The odd thing is the Illinois Department of Revenue says both sales taxes are exactly the same, applying to the same goods and having the same exemptions. They shouldnt be that far off, said Mike Klemens, the tax policy research director for the Taxpayers Federation of Illinois. County officials say theyre being conservative in their estimate but would welcome more money, if the referendum passed. Could it be $15 million? Sure, said Jamie Boyd, Kankakee County States Attorney. I dont think the county would mind if the number turned out to be more. It would be a nice problem to have.
