Kanpur on alert after Bodh Gaya blasts, but cops missing from important places. KANPUR: Though an alert was sounded in the state following serial bomb blasts at Bodh Gaya in Bihar, security at religious places remained lax in the city on Sunday. No policeman was deployed at prominent city temples, including JK temple which is thronged by thousands, especially on Sundays. Be it the famous Parmat temple or Shani Dev temple in Chunniganj or Sote Baba Hanuman temple, no policeman was found in the vicinity. Though the Industrial City has always been regarded as sensitive and a hotbed of criminals and anti-social elements, the police woke up to the alert in the evening and launched a vehicle checking drive. Force was deployed at city crossings and every two and four-wheeler was checked. Several two-wheeler drivers were challaned for not wearing helmets. The drive was conducted on the instructions of the SSP. The SHOs and their subordinates remained on toes during the drive. The massive drive went on for hours. City people complained of harassment and accused police of causing trouble. Various malls of the city tightened the security and ensured that every visitor was frisked. The security check at Kanpur Central too remained lax. The entire exercise was confined to a joint team of RPF and GRP inspecting the railway station premises. No policeman was deployed at the bunker outside GRP station on platform number one. In the past, railway authorities have received letters threatening to blow off the premises. At inter-state Jhakarkati bus-station too cops were missing. An UPSRTC official said that a small police party had arrived to check the premises. Since then no cop had turned up. He also claimed that the police team did not check any bus or luggage. Meanwhile, the members of Bhartiya Dalit Panther burnt the effigy of terrorism in protest against the blasts in Bodh Gaya. Party members demanded tight security cover for places of religious importance.TOI
