Kansas Weekly Crop Update: For the week ending June 23, 2013, temperatures continued to be warmer than usual across Kansas, as most areas saw 2 to 6 degrees above normal, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics, Service Kansas Field Office. Isolated thunderstorms brought much-needed rain to some areas, while others, even in the same county, received little to no moisture. Steady winds and warmer temperatures to end the week helped wheat fields dry down. Farmers in southern Kansas are rapidly harvesting wheat, with harvest reports as far north as Hays and Beloit. Producers took advantage of the average 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork to combine wheat, finish planting sorghum, cut hay, and start planting double-crop soybeans. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 14 percent very short, 26 short, 55 adequate, and 5 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were 24 percent very short, 28 short, 47 adequate, and 1 surplus. Field Crops Report: The winter wheat crop was turning color on 92 percent of the acreage, behind 100 a year ago and 97 average. Forty-seven percent of the crop was ripe, behind 100 last year and 69 average. The crop was 8 percent harvested, well behind last year’s 94 and 39 average. Condition rated 24 percent very poor, 21 poor, 27 fair, 24 good, and 4 excellent. Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 poor, 34 fair, 51 good, and 7 excellent. Sorghum planting was 89 percent complete, behind 94 last year but near 87 average. The crop was 64 percent emerged, behind 79 last year and 67 average. Condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 38 fair, 53 good, and 3 excellent. Soybean planting advanced to 88 percent complete, behind 98 last year and 91 average. The crop was 78 percent emerged, behind 91 last year and 83 average. Condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 30 fair, 63 good, and 4 excellent. Cotton planting was 88 percent complete, behind 100 last year and 97 average. The amount of crop squaring was 3 percent, behind 17 last year and 8 average. Condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 47 fair, 40 good, and 11 excellent. Sunflower planting was 74 percent complete, behind last year’s 88 but near 72 average. The crop was 49 percent emerged, behind last year’s 76 but near 50 average. Alfalfa first cutting was 98 percent complete, compared to 100 last year and 99 average. Second cutting was 13 percent complete, well behind last year’s 83 and 37 average. Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: The condition of range and pasture rated 25 percent very poor, 18 poor, 22 fair, 30 good, and 5 excellent. Hay and forage supplies rated 24 percent very short, 21 short, 53 adequate, and 2 surplus. Stock water supplies rated 16 percent very short, 16 short, 66 adequate, and 2 surplus.
