Kanyakumari, the fishing town in the southernmost tip of India where most of the fisherfolk who came down with the indentured, originated from. The boats look very similar to the boats the seine netters in Durban have. They not only brought seine netting to Durban, they also brought the art of Shad fishing. Most fishermen use hook,line and sinker, but they used hook,line and sinker with a float made from a cork. Shad normally swim closer to the surface and if the bait went too deep with just a sinker then the fishermen would miss the shad, hence the float. That shad-trace came from a fishing culture that went back centuries. The statue at the entrance of Kanyakumari is that of famous poet and philosopher Vivaknanda.
