Kapha Dosha Imbalance: An Excerpt from Healing Your Life, By Dr. Marc Halpern, available at Amazon and your local bookstore. When the kapha dosha becomes imbalanced, there is an increase in theinfluence of the water and earth elements, leading to an increase in their qualities within the body and mind. Earth and water mix together and the imbalance has qualities similar to mud. Mucus formation is a primary symptom. Mucus is the mud of the body. Symptoms may be noticeable early on in the digestive system. Moist heaviness reduces the strength of digestion and leads to a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen and a loss of appetite. The stools may become pale or covered with a thin film of mucus. As the imbalance spreads to the circulatory system, the body becomes more fluidic and sluggish. There may be generalized signs of water retention, such as slight swelling in the ankles and bloating around the abdomen. The eyes may produce more excretion and there may be a mild runny nose or post nasal drip. A mild lethargy and loss of motivation also begins. These are all mild symptoms and may or may not be noticeable until the condition settles into a weakened area. There the symptoms worsen. Any of the symptoms noted thus far can become much worse if the dosha settles into that location. If the dosha settles into the muscles, they become heavy and it feels like it takes more energy just to move the arms or legs. Tumor growth (mostly benign) can occur anywhere in the body, along with fluid filled cysts. The nervous system becomes sluggish and reflexes and reaction times slow down. Flow in the body of urine, stools, menses or blood slow down and can sometimes become obstructed by masses as they grow. An example of this is the obstruction of blood flow by deposits of cholesterol in the arteries. The mind can also be affected by a kapha dosha disturbance. When it becomes disturbed, the mind slows down along with the ability to process information. There is loss of motivation and melancholy sets in.
