Karachi Citizens Collective: Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Construction of Nuclear Power Plants Date: Tuesday, 11th November 2014 | Time: 4:00 pm Dear Fellow Citizens, At the beginning of this year, a group of citizens had raised concerns about the new nuclear power plants being built at the KANUPP site near Karachi. We held several meetings and approached the authorities about the need to conduct a public Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to address all the publics reservations about the project. View the original letter introducing this project: https://dl.dropboxusercontent/u/2184460/KarachiCitizensCollective.pdf After no positive response from the government, we were left with no choice but to challenge this project in court. A small group of citizens recently approached the Sindh High Court and requested that work on the project be stayed until a public EIA is conducted. The SHC granted us the stay and the case is proceeding with PAEC and PNRA now presenting their arguments. We are hopeful that the SHC will rule in our favour and order a public EIA. In the meantime, we feel it is important for us to continue to press for the EIA in our own circles. Also in the event that the EIA is required, we should be prepared with our arguments and concerns to present in the public hearing. With this in mind, we have organized two Town Hall Meetings at T2F to update you about this project and about the legal proceedings. The first Town Hall Meeting will be held at on Tuesday 11th November 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Barrister Abdul Sattar Peerzada and his team will update us on the status of the legal proceedings. The second Town Hall Meeting will be held on Monday 17th November 2014 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Professor of Nuclear Physics, and a co-petitioner in this case, Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy will speak about the project and our reservations about it. There will be a further update about the status of the legal proceedings. We request you to join us at both these meetings and add your voice to an important citizens initiative for the safety and preservation of our city. We need everyones participation and support to challenge this project. Please RSVP to karachicitizenscollective@gmail or call Lorina on 0312-292-1788 so that we can make arrangements accordingly.
