Karen will tell you, probably with a certain degree of irritation, that a really nice new barbecue has been sitting out on the N. Pat Veesart Memorial Patio for, like, 9 months now. The barbecue is designed to run on natural gas. Theres a nice, big, natural gas line that terminates right where the barbecue is. So why arent we grilling great steaks every night? Well, the gas line has a 1/2-inch nipple, and the barbecue has a 3/8-inch female connection. Thats obviously a problem, but thats why God gave us brass adapter fittings. And Home Depot. So for about 8-and-a-half months now Ive had an adapter, and Ive been aware of the Very Strange Problem that the barbecues quick connect fitting would never work when it was mounted on the brass adapter. Go figure. My interpretation was that the whole enterprise was cursed by an extremely ill-tempered daemon, and I pretended the lurking and quite inoperative barbecue didnt exist. This has been eating on me for about 8 months now. Eventually this sort of sublimated frustration bubbles over, and today was that day. I literally examined the damned fittings under a microscope. And I could see that the flared fitting on the adapter was pinning the Schrader valve on the quick-connect closed from behind. You couldnt possibly assemble both the adapter and the quick-connect at the same time. NOT.PHYSICALLY.POSSIBLE. The quick-connect really, really, really has to have an NPT, not a flared, coupling behind it. No joy on finding that whizgiz at Home Depot, but Amazon had it for $4 and pennies. And it will be here tomorrow. To be continued ... smile.amazon/Anderson-Metals-Fitting-Adapter-Female/dp/B000BOAERY/
