Karma Kagyud lineage is the most ancient tulku (reincarnation) system in Tibetan Buddhism. The line of Karmapas, starting from the first Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa (Knower of the Three Times), was predicted by Shakyamuni Buddha. Born on 6 May 1983, Trinley Thaye Dorje was reported telling people that he was the Karmapa at the age of six months. Shamar Rinpoche formally recognized him as the 17th Karmapa. In 1994, Trinley Thaye Dorje was enthroned by the 14th Kunzig Shamarpa as the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute in New Delhi, India.
