Karman Kaur meets Prarthana Thombare in first round NEW DELHI, JULY 27: The improved challenge with the inclusion of quality players like Nicha Lertpitaksinchai of Thailand and Prarthana Thomabre, as the top two seeds could improve the overall quality of play in the second $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament to be staged at the DLTA Complex here from Monday. While Nicha will wait for the qualifier to compete on Tuesday, Prarthana, the second best Indian behind Ankita Raina, will open her challenge on court No.1 against the 16-year-old Karman Kaur Thandi, on Monday. The six-feet tall Karman, a student of Ryan International School in Vasant Kunj, who trains at the Team Tennis Academy under coach Aditya Sachdeva, had given a good account of her game while losing the semifinals in the third set tie-break against the eventual champion Kim Dabin of Korea. The other singles match on the opening day will feature, the champion of a similar event here last year, Bhuvana Kalva against Kanami Tsuji of Japan, a talented left-hander with a strong game who had also made the semifinals last week. Rushmi Chakravarthi, a champion of dozens of such events in singles and doubles over the years, who had made Kanami Tsuji sweat in the pre-quarterfinals, will have to negotiate another round in the qualifying event to make the main draw.
