Karpal: No calls by grassroots leaders to boycott swearing-in DAP national chairman Karpal Singh said there were no calls by grassroots leaders of the opposition parties to boycott the swearing-in of newly elected MPs on June 24. He said all the 89 opposition MPs would attend the ceremony unless they were unable to make it for some valid reason. “I don’t think there should be any (boycotting). You have been elected and you have to be responsible,” he told a press conference yesterday. He said outgoing Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia was being presumptuous when he said he and his deputies would not allow any MPs to take their oath after June 24. “The constitution is clear that an MP can be sworn in at any time within six months (of being elected),” said Karpal, reacting to a June 11 report that MPs face disqualification if they deliberately boycott the swearing-in ceremony.
