Kashmiri prisoners subjected to severe tortures: Geelani, seeks help from int’l bodies By » [ GNS/Kashmir Headlines] Srinagar, Jun 26: In connection with “International Day against Torture” on Wednesday All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani demanded impartial inquiry by international community into the torture of One million Kashmiris by forces during the last 23 years. “Thousands of innocents lost their lives and equal numbers were rendered physically disabled in interrogation and torture cells during last 23 years,” Geelani in a statement issued to Global News Service said. He said the Indian authorities failed to file and register cases against the perpetrators, and “instead the culprits were being awarded with medals and promotions and encouraged for their heinous crime”. “Though on global scale, extra judicial killing and torture during custody has been described a war crime and the trial for involvement in custodial killings and torture have been brought within the jurisdiction of International Court of Justice but India which claims to be the world’s largest democracy does not mind and respect international laws,” Geelani said, adding that its armed personals continue their repressive measures against the people in state. He said that Hurriyat Conference is formulating a list of those SOG personals involved in violence, custodial killing and forced disappearance and the list would be submitted to human rights organizations, international institutions, and “as well, published to convey information for general public”. “We wish to make our future generation aware and any person having knowledge as eyewitness to any particular case should bring details to the notice of Hurriyat Conference,” he said. The Hurriyat Chairman in his appeal to human rights organizations sought their help in identifying those forces personals involved in mass killing, physical torture and forced disappearances of youth. The Chairman said that youth are beaten, subjected to electric shocks and even the local police resort to roller treatment. Referring to hardships the detainees in Kot Balwal face, Syed Ali Geelani said that they not only they suffer from physical torture but are kept in solitary confinement. Stressing international bodies for their impressive role, Geelani said that voices are being raised at global level against violence and torture but the organizations working against physical torture need to send their teams for assessment and suggest remedial steps. “Unless it is done, violence and threat against human lives would haunt civilized society,” Geelani added.
