Kashmiri student found hanged in UP ‘Family alleges murder’ Abid Hafiz Srinagar, Sep 5: (GNS) With deaths of Kashmiri students outside State continuing unabated, another mysterious death of a Kashmiri student studying at SRM University, Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh has come to fore. Abdul Manan Wani, a final year engineering student at SRM University, Ghaziabad, as per reports, was found hanging in his room on Wednesday night. While his body is yet to reach back his home at Chanapora, Srinagar, the reasons regarding his mysterious death still looms in dark as family reject the Police claims that the deceased committed suicide. While talking to Srinagar based news gathering agency Global News Service (GNS) Manan’s father Ghulam Qadir Wani termed it an open murder. “My son was neither a weak person nor was he having any kind of financial or educational stress. I knew my son very well. How come police say my son committed suicide without having any proof.” “It is unfortunate that J&K Police did not co-operate with us. They are showing no interest in handling the issue seriously,” the family member alleged. The reports regarding Manan’s death, as per family, are contradictory and illogical. “As per the eyewitness, Manan was found dead in his room, hanging while as Ghaziabad Police say he (Manan) died on his way to hospital,” the family alleged. They also castigated State government of not providing any assistance to deceased for conducting post-mortem and other necessary obligations. “It were his classmates and other students from University who contributed from their own pocket to pay dues for conducting post-mortem, coffin charges as well as air lifting his body to Valley,” Manan’s father added. A student from SRM University, Khalid Ahmed told GNS over phone that Manan was with them till 9 pm on Wednesday. “When we were informed about his death, we immediately rushed to spot and found a bed sheet tied with his neck while he was dead.” Khalid however added that Manan was hanged with 7 feet door while his height is 6.2 inches. “This clearly indicates that something is fishy,” Khalid added. Ghaziabad Police version Station House Officer (SHO) Modinagar Police Station said they received information from a private hostel that a student of SRM College had attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself in this hostel room. He (Manan) was rushed to hospital but died on way,” SHO said. He said we have sent the body for post mortem and are looking into the cause of this extreme step by checking up with his friends and call details of his mobile phone. Kashmir Police version The Police spokesman in a statement issued to GNS said that J&K Police have contacted Ghaziabad Police in connection with death of a student of SRM University, Ghaziabad namely Abdul Manan Wani, a resident of Chanapora, Srinagar. “Manan was putting up in a private hostel and we are in contact with Ghaziabad Police and deceased’s friends. Meanwhile, Jammu Kashmir Teacher’s Forum has condemned the mysterious death by terming it “barbaric”. “It is a serious concern that our students continue to die outside Jammu Kashmir. These deaths obviously point that they (agencies) want to crush the talent of Kashmiri students,” Chairman JK Teacher’s Forum, Showkat Ahmad Bhat while talking to GNS said. He also called for afternoon peaceful protests across the Valley tomorrow as a mark of protest against the death. “All schools will remain open only for half day,” he said. VNS (HMT)
