Katarina Update: Im cautiously optimistic after todays appointment at Penn. Our dear floofy girl showed signs of mild neurological improvement from her exam on Friday and her exam today. Her anal and bladder tone are still not normal but both are improved. She is no longer constantly leaking urine, which is wonderful. We checked to see whether she was dehydrated. She was not, so she really is not leaking urine. :-) Her blood work looked good. She is walking more on her hind toes than she was on Friday -- she had been walking mainly on her heels then. She is not exhibiting any signs of pain in her back. On Friday, her rear leg weakness was symmetrical. Today, her left leg is improved compared to her right leg. Her tail is still flaccid though. The neurologist suggests that we wait until Thursday or Friday to do her MRI. If she continues to improve, then she might not even need an MRI. The hypothesis at that point is that she had some type of vascular event (read: clot or stroke) in her spine. If she remains the same then he will want to do an MRI & spinal tap. If she worsens in any way, then I bring her in immediately to get an MRI, etc. Even if she continues to improve, her recovery could take months. Or it might only take days before she is continent again. Theres no one size fits all. Late in the afternoon I did see evidence that the litter box in her crate was used. But its not clear whether it was intentional because she sometimes likes to lie in it. I did not see what happened. But Im hopeful shes slowly returning to normal. She very likely will require physical therapy and possibly laser therapy or acupuncture. In the meantime, she needs to stay in her crate as much as possible to continue resting her spine. Im trying to stay realistic and not get my hopes up too high, but Im feeling cautiously optimistic and her neurologist feels that way as well.
